The Rorschach Ego Impairment Index: Prediction of Treatment Outcome in a Child Psychiatric Population

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the treatment utility of the revision of Perry and Viglione's (1991) Rorschach Ego Impairment Index (EII-2) in a sample of 53 child psychiatric inpatients. Parent ratings of symptomatic functioning on the Devereux Scales of Mental Disorders (DSMD; Naglieri, LeBuffe, & Pfeiffer, 1994) were obtained at admission, 30 days postdischarge, and 120 days postdischarge. EII-2 scores correlated with initial symptom elevations on the Critical Pathology at admission. EII-2 scores did not pre… Show more

“…In the text of the article, Stokes et al (2003) refer to this data as a 'biserial correlation' (p. 17). As indicated by Lipsey and Wilson (2001), the differences between the statistical properties of biserial correlations obtained from artifi cially dichotomized continuous data and product moment correlations are suffi ciently large to make their combination in a single meta-analysis questionable.…”

“…To create the PTI, the specific variables within the SCZI that had high false positive rates were revised (Exner, 2000;Smith et al, 2001). Like the SCZI, the PTI contains Rorschach variables such as poor Form Quality (X -% and M-) and Special Scores (e.g., Wsum6), which in various forms have been shown to be empirically related to thought disturbance, perceptual distortion, and cognitive slippage (Exner, 1993;Perry, Minassian, Cadenhead, Sprock, & Braff, 2003;Smith et al, 2001;Stokes et al, 2003;Viglione, Perry, & Meyer, 2003). To date, there are scant data on the psychometric properties of the PTI, but initial studies indicate that it may indeed outperform the SCZI in accurately classifying persons with and without psychosis (Exner, 2000;Smith et al, 2001).…”

“…There is, however, limited research on how RIM variables might predict change. The Rorschach Prognostic Rating Scale (RPRS; Klopfer, Kirkner, Wisham, & Baker, 1951), the EII, the MOA, and Holt's (1977) Primary Process Aggression Score (AGG1) have predicted treatment outcome in psychiatric adult and child populations (e.g., Meyer & Handler, 1997;Perry & Viglione, 1991;Smith, Van Ryzin, Fowler, & Handler, 2014;Stokes et al, 2003). Hilsenroth, Handler, Toman, and Padawer (1995) found the RIM Comprehensive System (CS; Exner, 2003) variables Cooperative Movement (COP), Texture-Shading (T), and Aggressive Movement (AG) to discriminate between patients who terminated psychotherapy prematurely and those who stayed on in treatment.…”
