The Roles of Osteopontin in the Pathogenesis of West Nile Encephalitis

Abstract: Osteopontin (OPN), a multifunctional protein encoded by the secreted phosphoprotein-1 (Spp-1) gene in humans, plays important roles in a variety of physiological conditions, such as biomineralization, bone remodeling and immune functions. OPN also has significant roles in the pathogenesis of autoimmune, allergy and inflammatory diseases, as well as bacterial, fungal and viral infections. West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquito-transmitted flavivirus, is the leading agent for viral encephalitis in North America. Rece… Show more

“…West Nile virus (WNV) is the most common cause of mosquito-borne viral encephalitis in North America [7,8]. Neuroinvasive WNV disease (WNND) is seen in <1% of cases and can manifest as encephalitis, meningitis, myelitis, flaccid paralysis, altered consciousness, and seizures [8,9].…”

“…However, the differences in its molecular weight (41–75 kDa) are explained by various posttranslational modifications [ 45 ]. Under physiological conditions, the hormone is expressed in various cells, including adipocytes, and is released to different body fluids [ 45 , 47 , 163 ]. Osteopontin signaling is mediated by its receptors: some integrins αvβ and CD44v3, v6-10 variants [ 52 , 162 ].…”
