The Roles of Natural Compounds in Epigenetics

Abstract: Epigenetic modifications include DNA methylation, histone modification, microRNA and lncRNA regulations, and take part in many physiological and pathological processes. Recently, it has been found that natural compounds are essential in regulation of epigenetics. By influencing the expression and activities of genes related with epigenetics and altering the expression and functions of miRNAs, many natural compounds exhibit the biological and pharmaceutical activities in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment … Show more

“…DADS decreased the proliferation and invasion of osteosarcoma cells by upregulating miR-134 expression (7) and prevented cigarette smoke-induced airway inflammation by inhibiting the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase and the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in lung tissues (8). DADS may also exhibit epigenetic regulation by exerting histone deacetylase-inhibitory activity (9,10).…”

“…Natural compounds have always been a major source of biologically active substances, and many are known for their effect on epigenetic processes such as DNA methylation, histone marks and lncRNAs ( Yang et al, 2018 ). The KDM enzymes are no exception; for example, several natural products like resveratrol, curcumin and melatonin have been reported as inhibitors of the LSD1 enzymes ( Fang et al, 2020 ).…”
