The roles of melanin-concentrating hormone in energy balance and reproductive function: are they connected?

Abstract: Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is an anabolic neuropeptide with multiple and diverse physiological functions including a key role in energy homoeostasis. Rodent studies have shown that the ablation of functional MCH results in a lean phenotype, increased energy expenditure and resistance to diet-induced obesity. These findings have generated interest among pharmaceutical companies vigilant for potential anti-obesity agents. Nutritional status affects reproductive physiology and behaviours, thereby optimis… Show more

“…It is noteworthy, as others have pointed (Naufahu et al, 2013), that MCH actions on sexual behavior probably incur in important survival gains by better coordinating the time for animals to engage in reproductive behaviors, since doing so in states of negative energy balance could incur in danger to the animal’s life and their potential offspring.…”

“…(207)]. The close appositions between MCH fibers and hypothalamic GnRH neurons (208, 209) and the expression of MCH receptors in GnRH neurons (209) suggest the direct action of MCH on GnRH neurons in mammals.…”

“…After more than 20 years of research subsequent to the discovery of the melanin‐concentrating hormone (MCH) in mammals, an extensive list of roles involving this family of neuropeptides has been described, including reproductive functions and the drive for motivated behaviours . Among the motivated behaviours is maternal behaviour, an essential component for the survival of mammalian species, granting nourishment and protection for the litter until the pups become autonomous.…”
