Living in the new era of globalization has been enhanced by ubiquitous information and communication technologies. These advancements in communication technology introduce many consequences in a person’s life and impact the psychology of potential users and may lead to many psychological concerns. This study examines the impact of digital citizenship and considered the effects of digital life on self-esteem and the potential mediating role of life satisfaction. The cross-sectional research design uses a purposive non-probability sampling technique with a population of 2597 Saudis with formal education. Data were collected via multiple research questionnaires: to assess individuals ‘concept of digital citizenship, the Digital Citizenship Questionnaire developed by Nordin et al. (2016); to measure self-esteem, Webster et al. (2020) state self-esteem scale; and to measure life satisfaction, the Satisfaction with Life Scale developed by Diener et al. (1985). It has been observed significant associations fall the dimensions of digital citizenship with self-esteem and life satisfaction, while life satisfaction played a significant mediation role between digital citizenship and self-esteem. Findings of the results address useful insights about the digital citizenship construct and its relationship with psychological attributes of self-esteem and life satisfaction. The results will significantly contribute to the field of digital marketing, and digital network-based organizations and enhances the knowledge about digital citizenship along with the responsibilities and ethical use of digital technology in the respective firms.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is an ongoing geriatric health emergency with a substantial increase in the prevalence of medical and mental health issues, particularly among older adults living in residential care homes. The knowledge of the risk and protective factors related to the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on older adults living in residential care homes is based on limited data. This study aimed to investigate whether loneliness mediates the effects of fear generated by a pandemic on depression. Additionally, we hypothesized that self-compassion moderates the effect of loneliness on depression. A sample comprised 323 older adults (females: n = 141, males: n = 182) with mean age = 74.98 years (standard deviation = 6.59, age 65–90) completed a survey comprising the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, De Jung Gierveld Loneliness Scale, the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire, and the Self-compassion Scale. The results revealed that the total effect of fear on depression was statistically significant, with a medium effect size (Cohen’s f 2 = . 14) and this association was partially mediated by loneliness ( β = .11 , SE = .04, P < .001 , t = 2.91, 95% CI 0.04–0.19). The self-compassion also moderated the loneliness effect on depression. The findings of this study support COVID-19 evidence, indicating that a greater level of fear generated by the pandemic is linked to depression and loneliness. The findings support the notion that self-compassion mitigates the adverse effects of stressful events in older adults. Customized self-compassion programs may be effective loneliness-mitigating interventions for older adults living in residential care homes. Socializing Targets of Older Adults’ SNS Use: Social Strain Mediates the Relations Between Older Adults’ SNS Use With Friends and Well-Being Outcomes

Studies have yielded mixed findings regarding the relation between older adults’ social networking site (SNS) use and well-being. Drawing on socioemotional selectivity theory, we sought to examine whether older adults’ SNS use with different socializing targets (i.e., family vs friends) would differentially predict global, social, and mental well-being outcomes indexed by life satisfaction, loneliness, and depressive symptoms, respectively. Furthermore, we examined whether social support and social strain would mediate, in parallel, the relations between SNS use and well-being outcomes. We recruited healthy, community-dwelling older adults (ages 60–93 years, N = 69). Using the PROCESS macro, we found that SNS use with friends, but not family, predicted poorer life satisfaction and greater loneliness via increased social strain. However, SNS use with neither friends nor family was linked to depressive symptoms. Furthermore, social support failed to account for the relations between SNS use and well-being indices. These results held when we controlled for a host of covariates—age, gender, education level, income, marital status, and overall physical health. Our findings reconcile disparate findings in the literature by elucidating that older adults’ SNS use with different socializing targets asymmetrically predicts life satisfaction and loneliness via varying degrees of perceived social strain.
