The roles of COX-2 in protozoan infection

Abstract: Protozoan diseases cause great harm in animal husbandry and require human-provided medical treatment. Protozoan infection can induce changes in cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression. The role played by COX-2 in the response to protozoan infection is complex. COX-2 induces and regulates inflammation by promoting the synthesis of different prostaglandins (PGs), which exhibit a variety of biological activities and participate in pathophysiological processes in the body in a variety of ways. This review explains the… Show more

“…In ammation is markedly in uenced by prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2), also known as cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) [23]. The activation of COX-2 can stimulate a rapid production of PG-endoperoxide and trigger an in ammatory reaction [24]. MMP is an extracellular matrix degrading enzyme that is involved in in ammatory and immune responses [25].…”

“…The gene encoding PTGS2, also known as cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), is located on chromosome 1 ( Mongini et al, 2014 ). PTGS2 is a rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of prostaglandins (PGs), which catalyzes the metabolism of arachidonic acid (AA) into various PG products including the precursor prostaglandin H2 (PGH2) and leukotrienes (LTs) ( Wang et al, 2023 ). PTGS2 plays an important role in lung diseases.…”

“…COX-2, an inducible COX-enzyme isotype, is one of the most crucial inflammatory factors in both acute and chronic pathological states. 42 It is a functional enzyme participating in prostaglandin production under pathological conditions and is highly expressed in precancerous and malignant lesions. 43 COX-2 is deemed a driving force in the progression of tumors owing to its fundamental role in inflammation, angiogenesis, immunosuppression, and invasiveness.…”
