“…The curve of transport dominance proportion changed little between 1935and 1953. From 1981to 2012, the proportion of transport dominance rose and fell between 0.1% and 25.9%. What's more, the peak value of transport dominance gradually increased from 3-4 in 1935, to 5-6 in 1981, and finally reached 6-7 in 2012.…”

“…The field of transport and mobility has seen a deluge of articles on older people and mobility in the last ten years, which span disciplines in transport and transport geography (Delbosc, 2012;Musselwhite and Haddad, 2008;Schwanen and Páez, 2010;Titheridge et al, 2009); gerontology (Arai et al, 2011;Davey, 2007;Gagliardi et al, 2007Gagliardi et al, , 2010Heikkinen, 2004;Hjorthol et al, 2010;Kaiser, 2009); urban studies (Burnett and Lucas, 2010;Lord et al, 2011); geography (Scott et al, 2009); architecture (Kim, 2011); health studies (Rosso et al, 2011;Satariano et al, 2012;Yen and Anderson, 2012); and psychology (Gagliardi et al, 2007;Oxley et al, 2010). Much of the literature, especially in transport, health studies and psychology, centres on older people's car use (Hakamies-Blomqvist, 2004;Harrison and Ragland, 2003;Hjorthol et al, 2010;Lyman et al, 2001;Oxley et al, 2010;Rosenbloom 2001Rosenbloom , 2009Rosenbloom , 2010Rosenbloom and Herbel, 2009), with debates on the relative safety and riskiness of older drivers.…”

“…Although the use of concepts such as 'accessibility' imply a focus on people's travel needs, the research methods used are often quantitative with more complex mobility practices, meanings and aspirations excluded due to an inability to quantify them (Alsnih and Hensher, 2003;Titheridge et al, 2009). Many studies emphasize the wellbeing aspects of older people's mobility (Arai et al, 2011;Delbosc, 2012;Gagliardi et al, 2010;Gilhooly et al, 2003;HakamiesBlomqvist, 2004;Kim, 2011;Hjorthol et al, 2010;Haddad, 2008, 2010;Rosso et al, 2011;Nordbakke and Schwanen, 2014;Schwanen and Páez, 2010;Ziegler and Schwanen, 2011), with mobility associated with maintaining social networks and providing access to paces that are directly (for example health centres) or indirectly (for example green spaces) therapeutic. The majority of these studies are premised on the increasing automobility of older people, which is both gendered (Davey, 2007;Hjorthol et al, 2010 andHakamies-Blomqvist andSiren, 2003), and differentiated by income and education; and this impacts on access to car (Lord et al, 2011).…”

“…Such studies look into how well-being is linked to various aspects of transportation, such as linkages between transportation resources and overall well-being (Delbosc, 2012;Ettema et al, 2010), satisfaction with different modes of travel (Morris and Guerra, 2015;Smith, 2013) and the link between activity pattern and well-being (Jakobsson Bergstad et al, 2012). De Vos et al (2013) provide a comprehensive survey of recent studies treating subjective well-being in the transportation field.…”
