The role of vitamin D in allergic rhinitis

Abstract: Recent studies suggest that vitamin D is related to allergic rhinitis (AR). In this review, we first discuss the physiology and metabolism of vitamin D, then we review the function of vitamin D in the immune system, and above all, we highlight the current research regarding the role of vitamin D in AR. Finally, we find that there are both experimental and clinical studies showing that vitamin D is associated with AR, although the results are not consistent and even conflicting. Evidences from those clinical st… Show more

“…Its other important activities concern the stimulation of Treg cell proliferation down-regulating the likelihood of allergic reactions, moreover the vitamin improves the integrity of the airway epithelial barrier [26, 27]. Many studies report that adequate vitamin D concentration improves the course of AR [28]; however, no such correlation was found between vitamin D level and MCT in the present study indicating that mucociliary clearance does not depend on vitamin D level.…”

“…1 The prevalence of confirmed AR in European adults was reported as between 17% and 28.5%. 1,3 Although the morbidity and mortality are relatively low, AR has remarkable burden and costs.…”

“…Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most common non-infectious rhinitis globally and is associated with sneezing, cough, and flu-like symptoms. It is an immune-mediated phenomenon and is initiated when the allergen is exposed to the nasal mucosa, which potentiates an 1 2 3 4 immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated inflammatory cascade [1]. It plays a significant role in debilitating general health and everyday routine.…”

“…It plays a significant role in debilitating general health and everyday routine. AR affects school attendance, workplace performance, and social life [1]. Even after the profound impact on the quality of life and healthcare economics, there hasn't been much control over the condition, which is due to its unclear pathogenesis [1].…”
