Edwardsiella piscicida (E. piscicida) is an important fish pathogen. However, the mechanism of Glu6P transport regulatory protein UhpA how to affect the virulence gene expression in E. piscicida is still unclear. The results in this study showed that the metabolism‐related gene expression of cysteine synthase (orf 1134) and sulphate transporter (ychM) in the uhpA mutant strain ΔuhpA was 0.76‐fold and 0.68‐fold lower than the ones in the wild strains (p < .05). The gene expression of ethA and ethB in the ΔuhpA strain was 0.80‐fold and 0.72‐fold lower than the ones in the wild strains (p < .05). However, the gene expression of fliC and flgN in the ΔuhpA was 1.51‐fold and 1.21‐fold higher than the ones in the wild strains (p < .05). The gene expression of T3SS (esrB and esrC) and T6SS (evpB and evpC) in the ΔuhpA was 1.27‐fold, 1.13‐fold, 1.28‐fold and 1.23‐fold higher than the ones in the wild strains (p < .05). This suggested that the uhpA gene could regulate the key virulence gene expression, and the uhpA gene was associated with the pathogenicity of E. piscicida in fish.

Impediment to the aquaculture industry and consequently, impoverishment of the Nigerian populace can be attributed to several factors ranging from managemental to infectious or noninfectious. Despite the abundantly blessed land capacity and nourishment, the industry continues to face several losses. As part of the very important infectious agents known to cause high morbidity and mortality across several fish species is Edwardsiella tarda. E. tarda is directly associated with enteric septicemia in several fish species and ages. Infections caused by this bacterium is usually presented as gastrointestinal (gastroenteritis) and extra-intestinal (myonecrosis, bacteremia and septic arthritis) infections. E. tarda is an economic and public health threat because of its extensive impacts on the aquaculture industry as well as its ability to cause severe human infections such as diarrhea, gastroenteritis, typhoid-like illness, peritonitis with sepsis, cellulitis and meningitis. Furthermore, they are associated with the global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human and animal population. The threat posed by this bacterium have necessitated this current review on the overview of the risk factors and the presence of the organism in Nigeria. An elucidation into the bacterium, its epidemiology, threat to aquaculture industry and the global population are reviewed and the probable ways to control the presence of the organism are also discussed. Novel genetic engineering of the genes of the organism as a vital tool to drug and vaccine development are germane in this current age as a useful tool and strategy to have a world safe and in health. In conclusion, this review highlighted the necessary steps and approach to mitigate the bacterium and safe the Nigerian aquaculture from the emergence of a fatal infectious disease from fishes to human, as well as improvement in global trading.

Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) is a Gram‐positive bacterium associated with disease in several commercial species and other animals including humans. This zoonotic pathogen has led to high worldwide morbidity and mortality and huge economic losses in aquaculture. Here a S. iniae ghost (SIG) vaccine was successfully generated with a chemical method, and its immunogenicity and protective efficacy were examined in this study. The results showed that the titres of immunoglobulin M (IgM) in serum were significantly higher in group A (SIG‐immunized) than group B (formalin‐inactivated S. iniae, FSI‐immunized), which was significantly higher than the control group (PBS‐treated). Also, the phagocytic activity was significantly higher in group A than group B, which was significantly higher than the control group. Moreover, AKP activity and lysozyme activity of serum in group A were significantly higher than group B, which was significantly higher than the control group. Also, IL‐1β, IFN‐γ and HSP70 in the head kidney of fish immunized with SIG and FSI showed significantly higher than the control group throughout the whole experimental period. In addition, IL‐1β and IFN‐γ in the spleen of fish immunized with SIG showed significantly higher than that of in the FSI‐immunized fish. Most important, the survival rate and relative per cent survival of group A were higher than group B, and both of them were all significantly more protected against the S. iniae challenge compared to the PBS‐treated group. These results suggest that immunization with SIG induces immune responses and provides protection against a virulent S. iniae challenge.
