The role of transferrin saturation as a screening test for hereditary haemochromatosis in an Irish population seeking medical care

Abstract: Given the number of positive findings in this study, we conclude that, in the absence of a national programme, TS could be used as part of a health-screening panel in the Irish setting. Patients expressing iron overload would be detected before organ damage occurred, leading to less severe clinical disease and better patient prognosis.

“…Although Gonzales et al [1984] previously used human standards to evaluate iron parameters in lemurs, it has never been determined experimentally whether human reference ranges for serum ferritin or %TS can be transferred to lemur species. The %TS value is regarded as a highly reliable diagnostic parameter in human hemochromatosis [O'Hara et al, 2003]; however, a complete investigation of lemur iron status would ideally include serum ferritin and, as a calibrating parameter, a histological evaluation of liver biopsies. While some differential causes for a decreased %TS (e.g., late pregnancy) or an increased %TS (e.g., starvation) could be ruled out for the individuals examined, it was not possible to exclude all differential diagnoses [c.f.…”

“…64 The participants in the studies varied depending upon the rationale for the study, including people diagnosed with haemochromatosis, 13,38,62 people attending a blood donation service, 65,67 those on registers of newborn children 63 or heart attack sufferers, 64 and those attending for routine blood screening. 66 Control groups included healthy blood donors, 38 people registered with general practitioners 64 and people on bone marrow registers.…”
