The Role of Tranexamic Acid in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: A Survey of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons

Abstract: Background Tranexamic acid (TXA) can reduce intra- and postoperative bleeding as well as minimizing postoperative swelling and ecchymosis. It can be administered both intravenously and topically during surgery with minimal side effects. “…[63][64][65][66][67] A similar economic benefit has been demonstrated in other surgical specialties as well as in trauma medicine. [68][69][70] This financial advantage may be more pronounced in low resource environments, where the costs associated blood transfusion can be significantly greater than in developed countries, both due to decreased availability of blood products and the higher risk of bloodborne infections. 71 We also found that rates of VTE did not increase significantly with TXA administration.…”

“…13 Tranexamic acid, by inhibiting plasminogen, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent minimizing postoperative seroma formation, swelling, and bruising which leads to a reduced downtime thus making a very big impact in facial aesthetic surgeries. 14 Tranexamic acid has been safely administrated postoperatively to reduce healing time and minimize bleeding complications of bleeding such as bruising. It is used topically during tooth extraction, orthopedic procedures, cardiac surgery, and other surgical procedures.…”
