Increasing studies have shown the importance of intraspecific trait variation (ITV) on the ecological process. However, the patterns and sources of ITV are still unclear, especially in the propagule of coastal vegetation. Here, we measured fresh weight (FW), fresh length (FL), maximum transverse diameter (TDmax), minimum transverse diameter (TDmin) and the ratio of TDmax to TDmin (RTD) of the hypocotyl (propagule) of Kandelia obovata for 66 genealogies across 26 sites. By combining multiple factors of climate, ocean and maternal tree to analyze their effects on the intraspecific trait variation of mangrove hypocotyl. The results showed that value of establishment traits (FW, FL, TDmax and TDmin which are related to mass) decreased along increasing latitudinal gradients and they were directly positively regulated by temperature. ITV of dispersal trait (RTD) was unstructured along latitudinal gradients, which was constrained by fitness tradeoff. Our findings indicate that establishment traits mainly varied between populations, whereas dispersal traits mainly varied between individuals. This study provides insights into the ITV of propagule in different functional dimensions on a broad scale and that may help integrate ITV into future analyses of mangrove protection.

Plasticity‐mediated changes in interaction dynamics and structure may scale up and affect the ecological network in which the plastic species are embedded. Despite their potential relevance for understanding the effects of plasticity on ecological communities, these effects have seldom been analysed. We argue here that, by boosting the magnitude of intra‐individual phenotypic variation, plasticity may have three possible direct effects on the interactions that the plastic species maintains with other species in the community: may expand the interaction niche, may cause a shift from one interaction niche to another or may even cause the colonization of a new niche. The combined action of these three factors can scale to the community level and eventually expresses itself as a modification in the topology and functionality of the entire ecological network. We propose that this causal pathway can be more widespread than previously thought and may explain how interaction niches evolve quickly in response to rapid changes in environmental conditions. The implication of this idea is not solely eco‐evolutionary but may also help to understand how ecological interactions rewire and evolve in response to global change.

Bioenergetic approaches have been greatly influential for understanding community functioning and stability and predicting effects of environmental changes on biodiversity. These approaches use allometric relationships to establish species' trophic interactions and consumption rates, and have been most successfully applied to aquatic ecosystems. Terrestrial ecosystems, where body mass is less predictive of plant-consumer interactions, present inherent challenges that these models have yet to meet. Here, we discuss the processes governing terrestrial plant-consumer interactions and develop a bioenergetic framework integrating those processes. Our framework integrates bioenergetics specific to terrestrial plants and their consumers within a food-web approach. It also considers mutualistic interactions, advancing understanding of terrestrial food webs and predictions of their responses to environmental changes.
