Ecosystem structure, especially vertical vegetation structure, is one of the six essential biodiversity variable classes and is an important aspect of habitat heterogeneity, affecting species distributions and diversity by providing shelter, foraging, and nesting sites. Point clouds from airborne laser scanning (ALS) can be used to derive such detailed information on vegetation structure. However, public agencies usually only provide digital elevation models, which do not provide information on vertical vegetation structure.Calculating vertical structure variables from ALS point clouds requires extensive data processing and remote sensing skills that most ecologists do not have. However, such information on vegetation structure is extremely valuable for many analyses of habitat use and species distribution. We here propose 10 variables that should be easily accessible to researchers and stakeholders through national data portals. In addition, we argue for a consistent selection of variables and their systematic testing, which would allow for continuous improvement of such a list to keep it up-to-date with the latest evidence. This initiative is particularly needed not only to advance ecological and biodiversity research by providing valuable open datasets but also to guide potential users in the face of increasing availability of global vegetation structure products.

Identifying biological processes that structure natural communities has long interested ecologists. Community structure may be determined by various processes, including differential responses of species to environmental characteristics, regional-level spatial influences such as dispersal, or stochasticity generated from ecological drift. Few studies have used the metacommunity paradigm (interacting communities linked by dispersal) to investigate avian community composition along an urban gradient, yet such a theoretical construct may provide insights into species turnover even in unnatural settings such as rural to urban gradients. We measured the influence of spatial and environmental characteristics on two aspects of avian community structure across a gradient of urbanization: 1) taxonomic composition and 2) functional richness based on diet, foraging strategies, nesting locations and morphology. We also measured the relationship between species traits and environmental variables with an RLQ-fourth corner analysis. Together, environmental and spatial processes were significantly related to taxonomic structure and functional richness, but spatial variables accounted for more variation than environmental variables. Fine spatial scales were positively correlated with insectivorous birds and negatively correlated with body and wing size. Urbanization was positively correlated with birds that forage at the canopy level, while emergent wetlands were negatively correlated with birds that nested in cliffs and frugivorous birds. Functional richness and urbanization were significantly related to fine spatial variables. Spatial and environmental factors played an important role in taxonomic and functional structure in avian metacommunity structure. This study highlights the importance of studying multiple aspects of biodiversity, such as taxonomic and functional dimensions, especially when examining effects of complementary spatial and environmental processes.

Abstract. Ramlah S, Santosa Y, Santoso N, Rushayati SB. 2021. The variation of bird diversity in various oil palm land cover in North Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3068-3074. The development of oil palm plantations provides various positive impacts. On the other hand, this development is suspected to bring negative impacts on biodiversity, especially reducing bird species diversity. Based on the other research, well-managed oil palm plantations that maintain high conservation value areas have high species diversity. This study aimed to identify bird species diversity in different types of oil palm plantation land covers in North Mamuju. Data observation of bird species was performed using the transect method. There were 4 transects on each land cover. The results of this study showed that the young oil palm area had a high index of diversity and species richness. The high species diversity in the young palm area was caused by habitat variations. There was a water flow that provides more feed sources. The distance between the young oil palm area and secondary forest area affected the number of species, species richness and diversity of bird species. The category of insectivore guild which included aerial insectivores and insectivores was the dominant guild in all types of land cover, both in the number of species and the number of individual abundances.
