The role of the posterior ciliary body in the biosynthesis of vitreous humour

Abstract: Recently, several groups have published new information regarding the origins and structure of the vitreous humour, and the inner limiting lamina (ILL) of the retina. This short article provides an overview of this new information. It is proposed that vitreous proteins are derived from several different cell types with the posterior half of the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium being prominent in the expression of several connective tissue macromolecules. In addition, some basement membrane macromolecules are a… Show more

“…The overall structure of cochlin resembles two other proteins, vitrin and akhirin, that also contain the FCH domain followed by two vWFA domains and that have been localized to the vertebrate eye (Mayne et al, 1999;Ahsan et al, 2005). Vitrin was originally identified in vitreous of bovine eyes and it is expressed in lens (Mayne et al, 1999;Bishop et al, 2002). Akhirin is expressed in the ciliary marginal zone, lens epithelium as well as in the retinal pigment epithelial layer (Ahsan et al, 2005).…”

“…7), suggesting that the small size of bel eyes at later ages is not due to proliferation defects but is due to the failure of the posterior compartment to form. The posterior compartment is filled with vitreous humor, which is produced by cells of the CMZ (reviewed by Bishop et al, 2002). CMZ cells appear to differentiate appropriately based on ␣-collagen expression in bel mutants (data not shown); however, this region of the eye is clearly disrupted, as evidenced by the gap between the PE and the lens, and by the presence of ectopic lens proteins (Fig.…”

“…The ciliary body is a structure in the eye, which is located immediately behind the iris and in front of the choroids. It secretes the aqueous humor, and is the source of the zonules that support the lens (Bishop et al, 2002). The ciliary body also contains the ciliary muscle, which changes the shape of the lens when the eye focuses on an object.…”
