The Role of the Mathematical Sciences in Supporting the Covid-19 Response in Australia and New Zealand

JAMES M. MCCAW,
MICHAEL J. PLANK

Abstract: Mathematical modelling has been used to support the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in countries around the world including Australia and New Zealand. Both these countries have followed similar pandemic response strategies, using a combination of strict border measures and community interventions to minimize infection rates until high vaccine coverage was achieved. This required a different set of modelling tools to those used in countries that experienced much higher levels of prevalence throughout the pand… Show more

“…This example mainly concerns the beginning of the pandemic (~ rst 6 months of 2020). More nuanced policy questions were addressed later during the pandemic (e.g., 13,28 ). Participants said that the successful incorporation of models early on to address simple, pressing questions helped to show the value for uptake later on (good return on investment), and infrastructure that could be readily leveraged (accessibility).…”

“…Our objective was to identify guidance for effective use of predictive models in practical decision-making within and across One Health sectors by understanding challenges and solutions in situations where this has been successful, and summarizing recommendations from experts who have experience with intelligence-to-decision work ows that involve science from models. We focused our inquiry on Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) -a country with a reputation for effective consideration of model outcomes in policy decisions [10][11][12][13][14] to understand conditions that lead to successful use of models for informing decisions. We conducted 41 semi-structured interviews across One Health sectors (Fig.…”

“…During the COVID-19 pandemic, effective and timely infectious disease surveillance was an integral part of government policy [1]. This emphasis on disease surveillance led to the development and extension of tools that can provide efficient and reliable updates on the effective reproduction number [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…Aotearoa New Zealand currently lacks dedicated forecasting tools for Covid-19 and other infectious diseases [21]. In this study, we present a method for forecasting Covid-19 cases, hospital admissions and hospital occupancy in Aotearoa New Zealand.…”
