The Role of the Inflammatory Response in Burn Injury

Abstract: Burns are characterised by significant local swelling and redness around the site of injury, indicative of acute inflammation. Whilst the inflammatory response is fundamental to the healing process, triggering a cascade of cytokines and growth factors to protect against the risk of infection, it is clear that prolonged inflammation can be detrimental and lead to scarring and fibrosis. Severe burns may display chronic, persistent inflammation long after the initial burn injury and may even result in multiple or… Show more

“…An efficient modality of blocking the activation of the immune system is the inhibition of mast cell degranulation by the use of disodium chromoglycolic acid, which diminishes the severity of the experimentally-induced thermal burns in rats (71). Preventing the recruitment and activation of immune cells is also another possibility of influencing the activity of the immune system, under burn conditions (75).…”

“…However, PCs role in burn wound healing is still yet to be deciphered. Burn wound environment is an atypical niche compared to incisional or excisional skin injury with excessive inflammation and a prolonged influx of inflammatory cells lasting for several days [7]. The goal of the present study is to capture the changes that might occur to pericytes in burn wounds and their role in wound healing including scarring and contractures.…”
