Parents influence the onset, course, and recovery of adolescent depression, yet are rarely integrated into mainstream adolescent psychotherapies. Systematically targeting parents offers a promising avenue for improving current adolescent depression treatment effects.Here we outline a modular, adjunctive parent curriculum designed to accompany individual adolescent treatment that integrates complementary techniques from positive parenting, interpersonal, communication training, and dialectical behavioral therapy to target parent behaviors and cognitions. Guided by empirical evidence from published literature and feedback from parent-adolescent dyads in a large outpatient clinic, this curriculum targets six core areas: expectations, emotion regulation, validation, reinforcement, communication, and relationship building. Through this treatment, parents learn how to respond more effectively to their adolescent's depression and create an environment that supports recovery. Notably, this curriculum is designed to be used alongside any type of adolescent therapy and can be implemented by providers of various training backgrounds to facilitate delivery across a variety of clinical settings. Clinical Impact StatementAdolescent depression is a growing public health crisis and current treatment effects remain modest. Directly targeting parent behaviors relevant to depression recovery may help improve the effectiveness of treatments. This article presents a parent curriculum to be used alongside adolescent individual therapy to help improve outcomes.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including child maltreatment and other adversities in the home context and beyond (e.g., witnessing domestic violence; parental mental illness; parental separation; living in a disadvantaged neighborhood) are prevalent in the population and often covary together. Research based on the construct of ACEs has transformed the field of adult mental health, yet child and adolescent mental health has often been overlooked in this work. This special issue of Research on Child and Adolescent Psychopathology focuses on the developmental science of ACEs and child psychopathology. The research presented here draws on the extensive evidence base that now exists regarding the co-occurrence of common childhood adversities, while informing the integration of theory and research on ACEs with that of developmental psychopathology at large. This Introduction provides an overview of ACEs and child mental health from a developmental psychopathology perspective, with an emphasis on key concepts and recent progress spanning the prenatal period through to adolescence and intergenerational pathways. Models of ACEs that emphasize the multi-dimensional nature of adversity and the importance of developmental timing to risk and protective pathways, have played a driving role in this progress. Methodological innovations in this work are highlighted, along with implications for prevention and intervention.

Eating disorders (ED) and affective disorders (AD) in adolescent population and several investigations have pointed out that specific family dynamics play a major role in the onset, course, and maintenance of both disorders. The aim of this study was to extend the literature of this topic by exploring differences between parents' personality traits, coping strategies, and expressed emotion comparing groups of adolescents with different mental conditions (anorexia nervosa vs. affective disorder vs. control group) with a case–control study design. A total of 50 mothers and 50 fathers of 50 girls with anorexia nervosa (AN), 40 mothers and 40 fathers of 40 girls with affective disorder (AD), and 50 mothers and 50 fathers of 50 girls with no pathology that conformed the control group (CG) were measured with the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), the COPE Inventory, the Family Questionnaire (FQ), and psychopathology variables, anxiety, and depression. Both parents of girls with AN showed a significant difference in personality, coping strategies, and expressed emotion compared to both parents in the CG, while they presented more similarities to parents of girls in the AD group. Identifying personality traits, expressed emotion, coping strategies, and psychopathology of parents and their daughters will allow improvements in the interventions with the adolescents, parents, and families.
