The role of the Engineering Geologist during construction

Abstract: The paper describes the functions that the engineering geologist may be required to perform whilst employed as part of the construction team during project development. Examples are provided from major schemes within the author's experience illustrating the essential part the geologist has to play. The role of the engineering geologist during construction is evaluated and conclusions drawn.

“…Earlier practitioners, as discussed above, have made some suggestions of what was needed and there are various papers available on the engineering geologist's role (Burwell & Roberts 1950;Edwards 1971;Rawlings 1971). The questionnaire responses identified five broad categories of skills that the proficient engineering geologist must acquire.…”

“…Commonly the resistant volcanic rocks underlie relatively steep slopes above gentler lower slopes that are typically more unstable than the higher slopes because of the difference in underlying rock types (K. F. Fox, Jr., written commun., .14 May 1974); thus in some parts of the map area, because of the geologic situation and the method used to prepare the map, the relative stability of lower and higher slopes may be reversed. The role the geologist plays in urban development, major construction, regional planning, site investigations, and other activities, will increase in the future, particularly as the geologist obtains better information and prepares more useful maps (Price, 1972;Taylor, 1972;Rawlings, 1972).…”

“…In carrying out these functions, the engineering geologist should form part of a team concerned with the planning, investigation, design, construction and operation of engineering works. Rawlings (1972) also described the role of the engineering geologist during construction.…”
