The Role of the Composite and Biologic Meshes in the Trocar Site Hernia Repair Following Laparoscopic Surgery

Abstract: The increasing proportion of laparoscopic interventions in the surgical centers has, also, determined an increased incidence of specific complications, such as trocar hernia. Nowadays, there is no unanimously agreed concensus regarding the optimal closure technique of the trocar incision, wether it should include the suture of the aponeurosis or not at the 10 mm ports. There is, also, no consensus regarding the proper surgical technique for the trocar hernia repair- alloplastic or tissue repair technique. The p… Show more

“…Revascularization attempts can often be difficult [35]. Here is how the perception of a problem can be changed by the angle of view from which we look [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44]. This study emphasised the connection between them in terms of pathophysiological mechanisms and severity of complications, both having a huge impact as DALYs contributors, shortening life expectancy and dramatically decreasing the quality of life.…”

“…Unfortunately, the implantation of foreign bodies can be associated with postoperative complications including seroma, mesh migration, mesh infection, or mesh fistula 5,6 . Mesh infection can occur between 1% and 8% of anterior hernia repair and remains a challenging postoperative complication [7][8][9] . Mesh infections are the third leading cause of reintervention following hernial repair and can result in significant patient morbidity, prolonged hospital stay, and increased costs 8,10,11 .…”
