The Role of Telemedicine in Hypertension Management: Focus on Blood Pressure Telemonitoring

Abstract: This review aims at updating and critically assessing the role of telemedicine, and in particular, of home blood pressure telemonitoring (HBPT), in the management of the hypertensive patient. Result from several randomized trials suggest that HBPT represents a promising tool for improving blood pressure (BP) control of hypertensive patients, in particular, those at high risk. Most studies documented a significant BP reduction with regular HBPT compared to usual care. HBPT interventions showed a very high degre… Show more

“…12 Home BP monitoring has the potential to involve patients actively in disease management and control, and it helps to diagnose white coat hypertension, has more prognostic significance, and correlates better with target organ damage than clinical BP. [16][17][18] However, the reliability of home BP measurements is not high because patients tend to report lower BP levels to the physician.…”

“…11 Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another through electronic communications to improve a patient's clinical health status. 12 Telemonitoring allows remote data transmission of the main vital signs (BP and heart rate, etc.) from the patient's home to the doctor's office.…”
