The Role of Synthetic Microbial Communities (SynCom) in Sustainable Agriculture

Abstract: Modern agriculture faces several challenges due to climate change, limited resources, and land degradation. Plant-associated soil microbes harbor beneficial plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits that can be used to address some of these challenges. These microbes are often formulated as inoculants for many crops. However, inconsistent productivity can be a problem since the performance of individual inoculants/microbes vary with environmental conditions. Over the past decade, the ability to utilize Next Generati… Show more

“…Nutrient competition might have been present between them, thus decreasing their total amount and ability to resist the infection of Rs. The genomic evolution and horizontal gene transfer may hinder the performance of the combination [48]. Besides, some microbes might change their microbial expression under different environmental conditions [48].…”

“…The genomic evolution and horizontal gene transfer may hinder the performance of the combination [48]. Besides, some microbes might change their microbial expression under different environmental conditions [48]. Therefore, the functions of these microbes could be changed upon assembly, resulting in the loss of the biocontrol effect.…”

“…Synthetic microbial communities (SynCom) has been reported as a highly reproducible tool for investigating the relationship between plants and bacteria ( Shayanthan et al, 2022 ). Follow-up studies will aim to isolate bacteria from infected lily grown under the continuous cropping system in order to detect specific strains and their pathogenic characteristics ( Yadav et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Synergistic interactions in the plant microbiome are major contributors to plant resistance. The design and inoculation of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) derived from native plant populations is a promising avenue for plant health promotion [ 178 , 186 , 189 , 190 , 191 ]. A noteworthy example of microbial synergism is displayed by the root endophyte Serendipita vermifera, which works with bacterial microbiota to confer protection against the soil-borne fungal pathogen, Bipolaris sorokiniana in Arabidopsis thaliana and barley; modulation of effector expression was observed for both the pathogenic and the endophytic fungus [ 192 ].…”
