Abstract:The surface charge against pH behaviour of spores of Clostridium perfringens type A was determined using a colloid titration method in the pH range 4-9. The native spores as well as various ionic forms of the spores loaded with divalent cations were found to be negatively charged. A positive colloid, MGCh, inhibited the ionic germination of the spores and this inhibition was highly dependent on pH. However, another positive colloid, GCh, did not inhibit the germination. Chemical modification of carboxyl groups… Show more
“…Since spores germinate normally after extraction of such enzymes, these surface bound enzymes appear to play no direct role in the germination process. Secondly, enzymes which are able to induce germination in permeablized spores have been extracted from both germinating and broken spores (Gombas and Labbe 1981;Brown et al 1982;Ando and Tsuzuki 1984). The best characterized of this second class of enzymes is the germination-specific cortex-lytic enzyme (GSLE) of Bacillus megaterium K M (Foster and Johnstone 1987).…”

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
