The role of supportive supervision using mobile technology in monitoring and guiding program performance: a case study in Nigeria, 2015–2016

Abstract: BackgroundSupportive supervision is one of the interventions that fosters program improvement by way of imparting knowledge and skills to health workers. The basic challenge in supportive supervision is the availability of data in real time for timely and effective feedback. Thus, the main objective of this study was to determine the contribution of real-time data collection during supportive supervision for timely feedback and generation of evidence for health intervention planning.MethodsWe analyzed supporti… Show more

“…The team coordinated and provided various national and sub-national level trainings including OJT on VPDs surveillance, routine immunization, and programmatic data management. Supportive supervisions has been found to be effective methods in improving not only AFP surveillance system, but also other public health programs [16]. It helped the local health workforce to consistently improve their performance, share knowledge and skills, and solve other systematic problems that contribute to suboptimal programmatic performance [17].…”

“…Poor supervision of health care services under the schemes by those responsible for such is an enormous deficit. Although, there are controversies about the effectiveness and efficiency of supervision of health care services deliveries (Bosch-Capblanch and Garner, 2008), however, more evidences back the claim that supportive supervision could improve performance of health systems (Tegegne et al, 2018). As it has been employed in several other contexts, supportive supervision could be a viable managerial tool to improving health systems performance and in programs such as the MSS/SURE-P MCH (Adejumo et al, 2016).…”

“…Among the various electronic data collection platforms, the Open Data Kit (ODK) application have been the most reliable and cost-effective for AFP surveillance (28). ODK is a free and open source set of tools to build a data collection form or survey, collect the data on a mobile/ android device, synchronizes, submit and aggregates collected data to a centrally managed server automatically, analyzes and visualizes the data in various formats (29). In addition, increased popularity and accessibility of mobile android phones, improved infrastructure, and the development of user-friendly applications made ODK most preferred platform (30) not only in disease surveillance also other public health programs (28).…”

“…Supervision is an excellent opportunity and effective strategy to identify knowledge gaps and provide further training to the health workforce to consistently improve performance, share knowledge and skills, and solve other systematic problems that contribute to suboptimal programmatic performance (31). Supportive supervisions are found to be effective tools in improving not only AFP surveillance system, but also other public health programs (29). However, there is scarce evidence on the application of real-time electronic data collection tools for quality supervision (29,32).…”
