The role of substance use, smoking, and inflammation in risk for suicidal behavior

Abstract: Future longitudinal studies are needed to test whether inflammatory markers mediate the relationships between smoking, clinical risk factors, and suicidal behavior; and to examine whether smoking cessation could reduce the risk for suicidal behavior in at-risk patients.

“…Use of common substances such as cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco smoking [5] has been linked to increased suicide attempt risk in previous studies [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. To date, most of the available evidence on the association of cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco smoking with suicide attempt comes from observational studies [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. However, causality cannot be established from observational studies alone [15].…”

“…Suicidal ideation and suicide attempt have been associated with different psychosocial correlates. Negative affect, hopelessness, low self-esteem [ 15 ], drug use, and early life traumatic experiences have been found to increase the risk of suicidal behavior [ 16 ]. We also know that SARS-Cov2 interacts with biological processes implicated in suicidal behavior [ 17 ].…”
