1 Dendroctonus micans is an invasive species that has spread throughout Britain, which prompts the question: how is the voltinism of this pest and its biocontrol agent Rhizophagus grandis affected by climate? 2 Dendroctonus micans and R. grandis were reared at a range of constant temperatures.Lower developmental threshold temperature (LDT) and day degree (DD) requirements for the egg, larval and pupal stage of D. micans were estimated to be 7.4 ∘ C 153 DD, 6.6 ∘ C 527 DD and 7.2 ∘ C 126 DD, respectively. At 12.5, 15 and 17.5 ∘ C, prior to prepupal cell formation, fifth-instar larvae underwent a diapause, which has not been observed previously in this species. Prepupal development rate also did not increase linearly with temperature. 3 For R. grandis, the LDT and DD requirements for the egg, larval, prepupal and pupal stages were 5.7 ∘ C 84 DD, 6.2 ∘ C 263 DD, 8.1 ∘ C 90 DD and 6.8 ∘ C 178 DD, respectively. At 12.5 and 15 ∘ C, most prepupae failed to pupate, which is indicative of a facultative diapause. 4 The key developmental parameters reported in the present study may be used to model the phenology of the beetles throughout their range, providing better-timed control strategies or to predict outbreak risk under climate change as a result of reduced biocontrol effectiveness.

Abstract--To understand the role of allelochemicals in predator-prey interactions it is not sufficient to study the behavioral responses of predator and prey, One should elucidate the origin of the allelochemicals and be aware that it may be located at another trophic level. These aspects are reviewed for predator-prey interactions in general and illustrated in detail for interactions between predatory mites and herbivorous mites. In the latter system there is behavioral and chemical evidence for the involvement of the host plant in production of volatile allelochemicals upon damage by the herbivores with the consequence of attracting predators. These volatiles not only influence predator behavior, but also prey behavior and even the attractiveness of nearby plants to predators. Herbivorous mites disperse away from places with high concentrations of the volatiles, and undamaged plants attract more predators when previously exposed to volatites from infested conspecific plants rather than from uninfested plants. The latter phenomenon may well be an example of plant-to-plant communication. The involvement of the host plant is probably not unique to the predator-herbivore-plant system under study. It may well be widespread since it makes sense from an evolutionary point of view. If so, prospects for application in pest control are wide open. These are discussed, and it is concluded that crop protection in the future should include tactics whereby man becomes an ally to plants in their strategies to manipulate predator-prey interactions through allelochemicals.

During a laboratory study evaluatingRhizophagus grandis (a specific native predator of the Eurasian bark beetle,Dendroctonus micans), as a potential biocontrol agent against the North American bark beetle,Dendroctonus valens, it was found that feeding larvae and laboratory-produced frass of the potential prey elicited very high oviposition responses in the predator. Comparative chemical analysis of this laboratory-produced larval frass revealed that one major volatile compound, (-)-fenchone, is associated with the larvae of bothDendroctonus species.D. micans also generated pinocamphone while oxygenated monoterpenes in the frass ofD. valens were camphor,cis-4-thujanol, fenchol, terpinen-4-ol, myrtenal, pinocarvone, borneol, verbenone, piperitone, campholenaldehyde,trans-myrtanol,cis-myrtanol,p-cymen-8-ol and 5-oxo-camphor. This range of prey-produced compounds with a possible biological effect onR. grandis was narrowed down subsequent to comparative analysis of field-collected larval frass. (-)-Fenchone, pinocamphone, camphor, terpinen-4-ol, borneol, fenchol, and verbenone were found to be common to both prey species. A mixture of these seven components was tested in a bioassay, where it elicited as much oviposition as did larval frass ofD. micans. The oviposition stimulants forR. grandis are thus clearly among the mixture's constituents.
