This paper is based on reviewing the literature in the past 10 years on the drivers of land use and land cover change (LULCC) in urban areas. It combines quantitative and qualitative keyword analysis of papers drawn out from the Scopus database. The analysis is primarily based on the number of mentions of keywords in the titles and abstracts of the papers, in addition to the number of keywords appearing in the papers. On the basis of content analysis, a three-level structural categorization of the driving factors was developed. These are presented in a schematic diagram, where the contextual factors are shown as influencing economic and financial factors and policy and regulation, which in turn influences transportation investments and availability, and industrial and residential location choices. Transportation availability was seen as the most frequent factor identified in the literature. This research contends that LULCC is mostly determined by interactions among these four themes in a three-level structure, and on this basis, a model is presented that illustrates LULCC drivers based on local circumstances across the globe.

The issue of sustainability is an interesting discussion on every concept of development in all cities worldwide. One issue in urban development concerns urban sustainability. It is widely understood in urban development that the distribution of land use directly impacts the sustainability of cities. The history of the city always impacts the distribution of land use. This study examines the relationship between land use distribution and the spatial structure of the road network and their contribution to urban sustainability in Central Business District (CBD) zone-based areas having historical value. Cities planned during ancient times are used as research objects. Connectivity and depth are used as syntax space attributes. Malang, Melaka and Kanazawa cities are chosen for this study for their historical value. Comparative studies were carried out by calculating the connectivity and integration axial lines of three cities in the CBD zone. DepthMapX is a space syntax tool for calculating the space syntax attributes used for this study. The study results are expected to help determine the integration concerning specific city zones. Furthermore, it will be able to gauge the suitability of the distribution pattern of land use and the spatial configuration pattern for these historic cities.

This study aims to monitor the magnitudes, rates, and directions of spatial urban expansions east of Cairo and their interactions with the initial morphologic landscapes. The approach relies on using CORONA satellite images acquired in 1969 with fine spatial resolution and time series images of Landsat and ASTER from 1984 to 2020. The CORONA images enable retrieval of the initial morphologic components, whereas the Landsat and ASTER images enable the spatial urban expansions to be mapped. The magnitudes of spatial urban expansions have been massive, in the order of 165 km2. These expansions have occurred through four main temporal phases with different spatial extents, rates, and directions in response to common urban policies and socioeconomic settings. Assessing the interactions between urban expansions and the morphology of watersheds in the study area indicates that the directions of urban expansion have been opposite to the geospatial orientations of the watersheds. In addition, significant urban areas in the order of ~8 km2 are under the direct threat of flash floods because they are misplaced within the valley floors of the studied watersheds. The study concludes that successful spatial urban expansion should consider the morphologic characteristics of the initial landscape for the purpose of maximizing interests and avoiding or reducing potential hazards against urban settlements.
