Context -Software process simulation modelling (SPSM) captures the dynamic behavior and uncertainty in the software process. Existing literature has conflicting claims about the practical usefulness of SPSM: SPSM is useful and has an industrial impact; SPSM is useful and has no industrial impact yet; SPSM is not useful and has little potential for industry. Objective -To assess the conflicting standpoints on the usefulness of SPSM. Method -A systematic literature review was performed to identify, assess and aggregate empirical evidence on the usefulness of SPSM. Results -In the primary studies, to date, the persistent trend is that of proof-of-concept applications of software process simulation for various purposes (e.g. estimation, training, process improvement, etc.). They score poorly on the stated quality criteria. Also only a few studies report some initial evaluation of the simulation models for the intended purposes. Conclusion -There is a lack of conclusive evidence to substantiate the claimed usefulness of SPSM for any of the intended purposes. A few studies that report the cost of applying simulation do not support the claim that it is an inexpensive method. Furthermore, there is a paramount need for improvement in conducting and reporting simulation studies with an emphasis on evaluation against the intended purpose.

Abstract-This research study has utilized an experimental design method to evaluate the impact of integrating process work flows, personnel factors, and rework into a dynamic software process simulation model and its implication for software project managers to respond quickly and correctly to changes that are occurring throughout the software development process. The failure rate of software project has remained high due to the failure to effectively manage the dynamic risks that are present throughout the software process. Current risk management methods, project estimation tools and models in existence have not met the need for continuous re-evaluation of projects as unexpected events occur. Many of the unexpected project events can be quantified and represented in a project plan and thus a simulation of the software process can model the effects of those events on the project outcome. The results of the study showed that extending existing models as input to the software development process and parameterizing the change factors and the project profile within a simulation can provide estimation of the effects of dynamic project changes on the outcome of software development projects in terms of effort and completion time.Index Terms-Estimation, simulation model, software development process, software development project management.

Abstract. Software Process Simulation Modeling (SPSM) research has increased in the past two decades, especially since the first ProSim Workshop held in 1998. Our research aims to systematically assess how SPSM has evolved during the past 10 years in particular whether the purposes for SPSM, the simulation paradigms, tools, research topics, and the model scopes and outputs have changed. We performed a systematic literature review of the SPSM research in two subsequent stages, and identified 156 relevant studies in four categories. This paper reports the review process of the second stage and the preliminary results by aggregating studies from the two stages. Although the load of SPSM studies was dominated in ProSim/ICSP community, the outside research presented more diversity in some aspects. We also perceived an immediate need for refining and updating the reasons and the classification scheme for SPSM introduced by Kellner, Madachy and Raffo (KMR).
