The role of simple elbow dislocations in cubitus valgus development in children

Abstract: While isolated traumatic dislocation of the elbow is uncommon among children, it can be successfully treated by urgent closed reduction, proper fixation of the elbow and appropriate timely rehabilitation. However, it should be considered that some patients may develop cubitus valgus deformity in a later period. Therefore, each patient with a simple traumatic elbow dislocation should be followed, and the parents should be informed of the potential for any deformity development.

“…The goal of surgery with nonunion lateral humeral condyle is uniting the fragment to avoid progressive cubitus valgus leading to ulnar neuropathy, pain and instability [18]. The repair of nonunion lateral humeral condyle remains controversial, especially those presenting with >1 cm of displacement [7,12,13,16,19].…”

“…Recurrence of dislocation was not seen in our series. Cubitus valgus is the most observed complication after elbow dislocation; it is more often seen in dislocations associated with other injuries leading to growth disturbance around the elbow 21 . Hinged elbow external fixators can be used for old dislocations after extensive soft tissue release 22 .…”
