The Role of Psychiatric, Analgesic, and Antiepileptic Medications in Chronic Pruritus

Abstract: Chronic pruritus is a complex yet prevalent concern without a gold standard treatment. The mainstay therapy for chronic pruritus includes topical ointments such as corticosteroids, capsaicin, local anesthetics, antihistamines, and immunomodulators. There are many different subtypes of chronic pruritus, and each unique subtype may benefit from specialized treatments. This review article sheds light on the role of psychiatric, analgesic, and antiepileptic medications in chronic pruritus. We believe that further … Show more

“…It should be noted, however, that butorphanol has no registration for these indications and is used off-label, including in refractory cases of pruritus [117]. Naloxone and naltrexone -opioid receptor antagonists -are used in the treatment of cholestatic and uremic pruritus [118]; however, opioid-induced pruritus is not an indication of their use. Anxiolytics and/or antidepressants from the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) group, such as paroxetine at a dose of 20 mg/day Forum Dermatologicum 2024, Vol.…”

“…Table 2 features several topical, systemic, and procedural therapeutics utilized by the authors in the management of neuropathic pruritus patients with variable success. Topical medications may work for a short time to relieve pruritus by various mechanisms, including anesthesia via lidocaine and pramoxine, topical ketamine and amitriptyline, peripheral nervous system activation via capsaicin, antihistamine, and antiserotonin/norepinephrine properties such as doxepin [37] . These treatments are often more effective for localized conditions such as brachioradial pruritus, scalp dysesthesia, or notalgia paresthetica [38] .…”

Według panującej wiedzy, około 8% dorosłej populacji cierpi na przewlekły świąd [6]. Towarzyszy on wielu chorobom, w tym dermatologicznym, układowym, neurologicznym i psychiatrycznym.…”
