The role of probiotics on slowing down the aging process

Abstract: The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota is one of the most complex ecosystems in nature that are mainly comprised of bacteria and other microbes like fungi, protozoa, and viruses. More than 1000 bacterial species have been reported in the gut microbiome, of which most of these species belong to Firmicutes (31.1%), Proteobacteria (29.5%), Actinobacteria (25.9%), or Bacteroidetes (7.1%) phylum. A symbiotic relationship, which plays a critical role in host health, exists between intestinal microflora and its host. W… Show more

“…In the present study, we observed a trend toward decreased diversity and richness in the AMA group as indicated by the PD, ACE, and Shannon indices, also suggesting that aging is an important factor affecting microbial composition. Similar to Lee and Sanlibaba's studies (Lee et al, 2022;Sanlibaba et al, 2022), the gut microbiota changes are generally characterized by the decrease in biodiversity and enrichment of opportunistic pathogens with aging. The gestational gut microbiota is characterized by a low alpha diversity index (intraindividual bacterial diversity) and a high beta diversity index (interindividual bacterial diversity) in the third trimester (Wallace et al, 2019;Mesa et al, 2020).…”

“…Probiotics are live microbes that confer health advantages to the host when administered in sufficient proportions (10 9 CFU/day). They have recently drawn a lot of attention owing to their potential to enhance the human health and fend off numerous diseases [1]. These helpful bacteria tend to be found in fermented foods and nutritional supplements, as they have been shown to support immune function, improve digestion, and alleviate some gastrointestinal problems.…”
