The role of parasitism and intraspecific competition in the population dynamics of the bark beetle, Leperisinus varius (Fabr.) (Col., Scolytidae) on European olives (Oka europea L.)

Abstract: Mortality from parasitism and intraspecific larval competition was measured for the olive bark beetle, Leperisinus varius, in cut logs within a Spanish olive orchard. Mortality due to parasitism was inversely density-dependent, whilst that due to competition was directly density-dependent. The consequences of these mortality effects of parasitoid and host population dynamics were investigated using a simple population model. In the absence of parasitism, beetle populations stabilized at around 12 adult females… Show more

“…Parasitoids do not necessarily exhibit responses to bark beetle density, although ectoparasitoids showed a density-dependent response when bark beetle density became high (Beaver 1966(Beaver , 1967. In other cases, however, parasitism of bark beetle larvae tended to be inversely density-dependent (Lozano et al 1993(Lozano et al , 1994(Lozano et al , 1996a. Predation resulted in delayed densitydependent mortality of the southern pine beetle (Turchin et al 1999), which corresponds with our findings.…”

“…When this occurs, the larvae come into direct competition for phloem food resources. This type of larval competition has also been observed in the bark beetles Hylesinus varius (LOZANO et al, 1993(LOZANO et al, , 1994 and Scolytus ventralis (STARK and BORDEN, 1965;BERRY-MAN, 1968).…”
