The role of openness in open collaboration: A focus on open‐source software development projects

Abstract: Open‐source software development projects are well suited for exploring new ideas and acquiring knowledge from developers outside of the project. In this paper, we examine the impact of external developers on innovation in open‐source software development from the perspective of organizational learning theory. We examine the roles of external and internal developers, who “explore” and “exploit,” respectively, on the innovation performance of 17 691 open‐source software development projects whose data is stored… Show more

“…At the same time, the open-source collaboration model has become the main development mode of the software industry. Not only realizes the sharing of human wisdom and improves the efficiency of software development, but it also leads the technological innovation and value creation; big data, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other emerging areas of basic software are based on open source mode of research and development [1][2][3]. Open source software is unstoppable, and its significance is growing day by day, just as the roads and bridges in the software world [4][5][6].…”

“…Collaborating social organizations [1] is not a new phenomenon so that individuals will be inspired intuitively when working together, outperforming their expectations [2]. Simultaneously, collaborative teams are achieving their goals, and each individual seeks to maximize their potential through inner competitive and benevolent relations [2,3].…”
