The role of nutrition in geriatric rehabilitation

Abstract: Geriatric patients undergoing a rehabilitation program outside inpatient, ambulatory, or hospitalization care need an adequate supply of energy and nutrients. Malnutrition must be avoided, ideally before starting rehabilitation. Nutritional interventions are most beneficial in combination with exercise training.

“…As nutritional status can worsen during the first week after a stroke, nutritional care should occur in parallel with early rehabilitation . In intervention trials with nutritional care of geriatric rehabilitation, a number of benefits for muscle mass, muscle strength, physical function or the outcomes quality of life and rehospitalization were identified . The presence of a multidisciplinary rehabilitation nutrition team increased the frequency of sarcopenia evaluation and the practice of rehabilitation nutrition .…”

“…Malnutrition in older populations is linked to increased falls risk, decreased quality of life and higher morbidity and mortality [9e12]. Malnourished older adults within residential care, inpatient and outpatient settings show lower physical performance [13], muscle mass, muscle strength [14,15], cognitive functioning and higher risk for depression [16] compared to individuals not malnourished [17,18]. Identification of malnutrition is critical to initiate timely treatment, however, global consensus for diagnosing malnutrition is still elusive.…”

“…Therefore, GR mostly accommodates multimorbid patients and aims at the recovery of physical abilities for a largely independent life in the community. The primary aim of GR is to recover an age-appropriate mobility as well as to support self-sufficiency and thus, to avoid long-term care [16][17][18].…”
