The role of nutrition and nutraceutical supplements in the treatment of hypertension

Abstract: Vascular biology, endothelial and vascular smooth muscle and cardiac dysfunction play a primary role in the initiation and perpetuation of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and target organ damage. Nutrientgene interactions and epigenetics are predominant factors in promoting beneficial or detrimental effects in cardiovascular health and hypertension. Macronutrients and micronutrients can prevent, control and treat hypertension through numerous mechanisms related to vascular biology. Oxidative stress, infla… Show more

“…Food and nutrients can prevent, control and treat hypertension through numerous vascular biology mechanisms. The use of a single and/or a multi-compound nutraceutical supplement including vitamins, antioxidants and minerals in the treatment of hypertension is based on scientifically controlled studies to complement the optimal dietary intake and other lifestyle modification (Houston, 2014). Some natural compounds have been found to possibly have potential beneficial effects against hypertension Curcumin and its derivative tetrahidrocurcumin lead to a decrease of blood pressure, peripheral vascular resistance, aortic stiffness and oxidative stress.…”

“…The newly formulated herbomineral formulation, which was a combination of ashwagandha root extract along with trace elements such as zinc chloride, magnesium gluconate hydrate, and sodium selenate for immunomodulatory activity. Each constituent of this formulation commonly used as nutraceutical supplement [8][9][10][11]. Herbomineral formulations are reported to improve the general health by increasing the body's immunity.…”
