The Role of N and S Doping on Photoluminescent Characteristics of Carbon Dots from Palm Bunches for Fluorimetric Sensing of Fe3+ Ion

Abstract: This work aims to enhance the value of palm empty fruit bunches (EFBs), an abundant residue from the palm oil industry, as a precursor for the synthesis of luminescent carbon dots (CDs). The mechanism of fIuorimetric sensing using carbon dots for either enhancing or quenching photoluminescence properties when binding with analytes is useful for the detection of ultra-low amounts of analytes. This study revealed that EFB-derived CDs via hydrothermal synthesis exceptionally exhibited luminescence properties. In … Show more

“…At the same time, altering the core–shell CQD composition by N-, S-, P-, or B-doping enhances the fluorescence quantum yield (QY). Such doping alters the energy between the lowest unoccupied (LUMO) and the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) . By the interplay of CQD chemistry and morphology, it is possible to obtain fluorescence in the full spectral range from ultraviolet (UV) to near-IR (NIR).…”

“…[19]. Recently, hydrothermal carbonization of biomass has been one of the most attractive routes for the preparation of carbon, since this method is green, simple, and eco-friendly [18,20]. Among various biomass resources for preparing carbon spheres, hemicelluloses are very promising because they are considered as the second most abundant renewable resource only after cellulose.…”

“…Since Xu found carbon nanoparticles with fluorescence for the first time in the separation and purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes by electrophoresis in 2004 [ 9 ], the study of fluorescent CDs has attracted increasing attention. Since there are many raw materials and a variety of preparation methods available in the CD preparation process, various CDs have been prepared [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”
