The role of motivation to lead for leadership training effectiveness

Abstract: In this study, the construct of motivation to lead (MtL) is considered as a predictor of leadership training effectiveness. MtL, the individual preference to take on leadership roles, is a motivation that specifically relates to the content of leadership training. A total of 132 managers participated in a longitudinal follow-up study. The influence of MtL on training effectiveness is explained by a serial mediation process. Individuals high on MtL benefit more from training by acquiring more leadership compete… Show more

“…First, only the affective component of MtL was used in this study. Although a‐MtL shows a stronger link with outcomes such as team effectiveness, leadership emergence, and training effectiveness (Hendricks & Payne, ; Oh, ; Stiehl et al, ) and thus seems more important than the calculative and normative component, future studies should investigate the link between all three MtL components and vocational interests, leadership experiences and success, so that a more fine‐grained picture can emerge. Second, due to constraints regarding testing time, only single‐item scales could be used for the mediator variables.…”

“…The key to this approach is that leadership skills and styles can be learnt, therefore MTL might change in the course of time. Some recent studies have found empirical support for that assumption (for instance Waldman, Galvin and Walumbwa, 2012;Stiehl, Felfe, Elprana and Gatzka, 2015). Amit et al, (2007) proposed two additional dimensions to the three-component MTL construct: patriotic and ideological.…”

“…Recent research findings by Elprana, Felfe, Stiehl, and Magdalena [12] support the notion that MTL is a particularly good predictor of leadership emergence. Stiehl, Felfe, Elprana and Gatzka [13] suggests that individuals high on MTL benefit more from training by acquiring more leadership competencies, which in turn results in more effective leadership behaviour and ultimately higher training effectiveness.…”
