The Role of Mononuclear Phagocytes in the Testes and Epididymis

Abstract: The mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) is the primary innate immune cell group in male reproductive tissues, maintaining the balance of pro-inflammatory and immune tolerance. This article aims to outline the role of mononuclear macrophages in the immune balance of the testes and epididymis, and to understand the inner immune regulation mechanism. A review of pertinent publications was performed using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases on all articles published prior to January 2021. Search terms were bas… Show more

“…Macrophages, the most abundant immunoreactive cells in the mouse epididymis [60], are self-maintained at homeostasis independently of the bone marrow hematopoietic precursors, and colony stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) is essential for the survival of testicular and epididymal macrophages [61]. Macrophages are predominantly distributed in the mesenchymal and peritubular regions of the epididymis, the highest concentration of macrophages can be found in the IS and the caput region, where the dendritic extensions into the lumen are more extensive.…”

“…(39). A separate category is tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), which populate many types of tumors and, depending on the cancer type and tumor environment, fight or promote cancer development and metastasis (40)(41)(42)(43) Another distinct category, described as a mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS), includes all types of macrophages and their bone marrow (BM) progenitors (44).…”

“…Testicular macrophages can be distinguished by their origins, their polarization status, the cytokines they produce and their functions. The table summarizes the information collected from three references (Williams et al, 2018;Shi et al, 2022;Mass et al, 2023).…”
