The role of monitoring and evaluation to ensure functional access to community-based early diagnosis and treatment in a malaria elimination programme in Eastern Myanmar

Abstract: Background Improving access to early diagnosis and treatment (EDT) has increasingly proven to be a major contributor to decreasing malaria incidence in low-transmission settings. The Malaria Elimination Task Force (METF) has deployed malaria posts set up in Eastern Myanmar, providing free uninterrupted community-based access to EDT in more than 1200 villages. Ensuring high quality services are provided by these malaria posts is essential to reaching elimination targets. The present study aimed to … Show more

“…We also noted that ³ 5 days of fever before diagnosis was associated with gametocytemia. Delays between the onset of malarial symptoms and presentation at a healthcare facility for treatment play an important role in maintaining malaria transmission, 33,34 as persons who delay treatment remain infectious for longer periods of time. 26 These findings underscore the need for strategies to increase community awareness of the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment for malaria.…”

“…The CCMP approach for early detection and treatment of malaria along with DAMaN initiative resulted in reducing the size of infectious reservoirs [8]. The strengthening of malaria case management system through community-based intervention has been also implemented in various countries for malaria control [8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…The data in this study indicate that outbreaks are due to local transmission, which calls for two different responses: for cases imported to areas where transmission is unlikely, it is more a medical treatment case, so there should be border checks and treatment; whilst for local cases, there needs to be more emphasis on vector control. Elsewhere, it has been previously demonstrated in Eastern Myanmar that early diagnosis and prompt onsite treatment of confirmed cases is effective in achieving malaria elimination [ 32 ]. Also, it has been observed in southern Iran that the presence of foreign immigrants could cause malaria outbreaks [ 33 ].…”
