The Role of Moisturizers in Addressing Various Kinds of Dermatitis: A Review

Abstract: Moisturizer is a major component of basic daily skin care, particularly in presence of epidermal barrier alteration and reduced epidermal water content. It is an important part of a dermatologist's strategy to maintain skin health as well as treating various dermatoses which co-exist with skin dryness and are linked to impaired skin barrier function, such as in atopic disorders as well as other types of dermatitis. Mastering the knowledge regarding mechanism of action, application, dosage, adverse effects as w… Show more

“…Also it should be stressed that both pimecrolimus and tacrolimus have antifungal action against Malassezia yeasts (Sugita et al, 2006) so at least part of their activity in seborrheic dermatitis can be attributed to this. A variety of alternative or natural product treatments are also suggested for seborrheic dermatitis (Gupta and Versteeg, 2017) while a recent suggestion is the use of formulations that restore the barrier function of the skin (Purnamawati et al, 2017) and definitely formulations that restore the barrier function of the skin will be a useful addition to treatment (Wikramanayake et al, 2019). Furthermore various salts are also efficient, like lithium succinate, which seems to interfere with the availability of the prerequisite lipids for Malassezia growth (Mayser and Schulz, 2016).…”

“…Although many topical preparations have been shown to be effective in highly controlled clinical trials, their frequency of use by patients varies dramatically in practice. Unachievable routines and unpleasant smell and consistency are commonly cited reasons for poor adherence (51,57).…”

“…Lotions contain more water than lipids; creams contain lipids, water and an emulsifier; and ointments are primarily lipid based (49,51). The most appropriate formulation for the patient can depend on a variety of factors, including season, tolerability, cost, mechanism of action, fragrance, age, body area and gender (51,57,58). For example, emollients targeting the face aim to be noncomedogenic (64,65).…”

“…Collagen is being investigated for its potential use in the biomedical field as biomaterials for biomedical or pharmaceutical applications. Collagen is also used as a moisturizer and natural humectant in cosmetic formulations (Purnamawati, et al, 2017). Collagen, which is a high-molecular weight protein, cannot be absorbed by the stratum corneum of the skin and thus remains on the skin surface and acts as a water-uptake through hydration to keep the skin moisturized (Yong et al, 2004) and as protector against microbial infiltration in cases of wounded tissue (Chattopadhyay and Raines , 2014).…”
