This review briefly summaries the principles and mechanisms of action of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as concerns its application in the oncological field, highlighting its drawbacks and some of the strategies that have been or are being explored to overcome them. The major aim is to increase the efficiency and selectivity of the photosensitizer (PS) uptake in the cancer cells for optimizing the PDT effects on tumors while sparing normal cells. Some attempts to achieve this are based on the conjugation of the PS to biomolecules (small ligands, peptides) functioning as carriers with the ability to efficiently penetrate cells and/or specifically recognize and bind proteins/receptors overexpressed on the surface of cancer cells. Alternatively, the PS can be entrapped in nanocarriers derived from various types of materials that can target the tumor by exploiting the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effects. The use of nanocarriers is particularly attractive because it allows the simultaneous delivery of more than one drug with the possibility of combining PDT with other therapeutic modalities.

Abstract. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death, resulting in approximately 0.7 million deaths each year, and the sixth most common malignancy worldwide (1-3). The recognized risk factors for HCC are hepatic disorder associated with steatosis, cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, alcohol, chemical agents, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and so forth (4). Despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, the effectiveness of therapy for HCC remains unsatisfactory, and HCC has a hidden development and a poor prognosis (5, 6). Therefore, there is an urgent requirement for novel therapeutic compounds for the treatment of patients with HCC. Many animal models of hepatocarcinogenesis have been established to examine the effects of therapeutic agents. Diethylnitrosamine (DEN) is frequently used as a hepatocarcinogenic agent in rodents (1). In our experimental model, externally visible foci were observed and measured by stereomicroscopy. It has been established that DEN induces HCC in animals with a developmental course similar to that of human HCC (7). Furthermore, DEN is an indirect alkylating agent that induces the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage DNA through oxidation (8).Senescence marker protein-30 (SMP30) is a calciumbinding protein, and its levels in the liver, kidney, and lung become significantly down-regulated with aging in an androgen-independent manner (9, 10). How stress contributes to autoimmunity—lessons from Sjögren's syndrome

A large body of clinical evidence on the association between stressful life events and autoimmune diseases suggests that stress may play an important role in the pathogenesis of these disorders. In this article, we discuss the effects of stress, not on the immune system but on specific cell populations against which the autoimmune reactivity is directed. Using Sj€ ogren's syndrome as a model autoimmune disease, we review the role of stress in the initiation and perpetuation of autoimmune reactivity. We present data that reveal the effects of stress on salivary gland epithelial cells, suggesting that stress can become immunogenic through its various effects on salivary gland epithelium.
