The role of MicroRNAs in female and male human reproduction: A Narrative Review

Abstract

The role of MicroRNAs in human reproduction is exciting, and probably these regulatory molecules have an essential role in reproductive function. Currently, the regulatory role of miRNAs in male and female reproduction needs to be clearly understood, with a considerable amount of controversial and contradictory data. A targeted review of high-quality studies published to date on miRNA patterns related to female and male reproduction to describe their role and relationship with infertility and update knowledge in this field.A comprehensive review of the literature published in the PubMed -MEDLINE and Google Scholar databases from the first year of available online cataloging to 2022. Early outcome of miRNA expression in miRNAs, infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, and biomarkers identified 18,100 articles. Based on aims, 72 articles were selected. Regarding the presence and content of MicroRNAs, this review showed that each tissue and cell contains a well-defined and stable population of MicroRNAs that can be potentially related to spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Our extensive review of studies indicates a consistent relationship between aberrant miRNA expression and infertility. Therefore, measuring the expression of specific miRNAs identified is beneficial as biomarkers for male and female infertility and for developing new and specialized treatments.
