The Role of MicroRNAs in Influencing Body Growth and Development

Abstract: Body growth and development are regulated among others by genetic and epigenetic factors. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are epigenetic regulators of gene expression that act at the post-transcriptional level, thereby exerting a strong influence on regulatory gene networks. Increasing studies suggest the importance of miRNAs in the regulation of the growth plate and growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis during the life course in a broad spectrum of animal species, contributing to longitudinal growth. “…Micro-ribonucleic acids are involved in cell cycle regulation, in cell programming as well as in cell differentiation and tissue formation (12). Moreover, microRNAs exert a pivotal role on embryo development, on organ formation as well as on growth (13)(14)(15). Due to their pivotal role on regulation of cellular processes, microRNA dysregulation is considered to be directly associated with the pathogenesis of several diseases and pathophysiological conditions, including developmental diseases, cancer and infertility (16).…”

“…This study has several limitations. First, we did not examine other genetic mechanisms affecting growth [ 31 33 ]. These mechanisms can be confounding factors that may block the correlation between the methylation difference and predicted LLD.…”

“…Specific PCR tests have been developed for microRNAs (miRNA expression profiles). miRNAs are epigenetic regulators of gene expression that act at the post-transcriptional level, influencing regulatory gene networks [209]. Several miRNAs regulate the growth plate and GH-IGF axis, contributing to longitudinal growth.…”

“…Several miRNAs regulate the growth plate and GH-IGF axis, contributing to longitudinal growth. For example, miR-709 inhibits GHRP6-induced GH synthesis by targeting PRKCA in the pituitary [209, 210]. There are indications that miRNAs are also involved in catch-up growth in children born SGA [211].…”
