“…Regarding to the enhancement of liver protection by DOW, DOW has intrinsic hepatoprotective functions (Ha et al 2014;Siscar et al 2014). In the previous study, the submerged culture consists of DOW as the main water source; therefore, the functional ingredients of DOW were accumulated in the A. camphorata mycelium and fermentation filtrates (Wang et al 2013a).…”

“…Additionally, DOW substantially reduced TAA-induced TNF-α and α-SMA expression levels and collagen production abilities (Wang et al 2013a). Previous studies have demonstrated the antiinflammatory and hepatoprotective effects of DOW (Ha et al 2014;Siscar et al 2014). Therefore, the hepatoprotective effects of DOW were accumulated in DOW-AC, which enhanced preventive effects against liver fibrosis (Wang et al 2013a).…”

“…All the phenomena could be elucidated by chemical property of the thiolate bond (Suzuki et al, 2002). Some deep-sea fish species like Alepocephalus rostratus sequester heavy metals like Hg and Ag bound to MT under the synergy effects of Se (Siscar et al, 2014). Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas also secretes mucus containing MT proteins that decrease Cu and Cd concentrations in hepatic and renal (Andreani et al, 2008).…”

“…According to Maffuci et al (2005), it appears that loggerhead turtles can regulate Se concentrations through homeostatic processes in a balance between metabolic requirements and prevention against toxic effects. Also the presence of Se in tissues reduces Cd toxicity by storing and reallocating these toxic metals and thus, diminishing its potential adverse effect (Siscar et al, 2014). Heavy metals or metalloids, including Pb, As and Cd, have an important physiological role in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating reactions (Konigsberg, 2008), and elements such as Se, Zn, Cu or Mn have a protective role in preventing metals toxicity in aquatic organisms due to their association with antioxidant enzymes (Livingstone, 2001), such as glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase.…”
