The role of medical social workers in cancer clinical trial teams: A group case study of multidisciplinary perspectives

Abstract: We found discordance in the way that social workers and their team members view the roles of social workers in clinical trials. Our data suggest that structural and interpersonal barriers may prevent social workers from working to the full extent of their license in a clinical trial context. Implications, future research, and suggestions for interventions to more fully integrate social workers into clinical trial settings are discussed.

“…"You'll then make phone calls -basically you're the receptionist"). The literature on the role of social work within interdisciplinary teams certainly supports this variation in the space available for performing the dual foci of the profession (Zerden et al, 2019;Ashcroft et al, 2018;Peterson et al, 2018). Peterson et al (2018, p.688) found, for example, that "other members of the multidisciplinary teams viewed the roles of social workers to be focused on being a conduit and coordinator".…”

“…15 This study further highlights the challenge many SWs face in their current interdisciplinary team job placement. 11,16 Underutilization of SWs full scope of practice and licensing potential frustrates both SW and HTC staff, disrupting timely referrals for optimal patient care and SW self-actualization. The needs for ongoing education and understanding of the SW role persists and is essential for workplace satisfaction, retention, and resiliency, and best patient care.…”

“…5 For SWs to function interdependently, and at full capacity of their license, colleagues must understand the distinction between their own roles and those of SWs; data suggests there is a current gap. [6][7][8][9][10][11] Ambiguous SW role definitions can lead to the perceptions of other professionals as providing similar services and even lead to conflict or "turf wars". 12 In some organizations, SWs, case managers, and nurse navigators are called to do similar tasks, making it difficult to achieve a collaborative and effective model of best practice while causing provider and patient confusion.…”

“…The findings are somewhat in line with the findings of the preceding study. In Korea, a study of attitudes toward linkage of clinical care and community-based health care found that more than 50 percent of the interviewed 635 social and healthcare workers noted that medical institutions and social services should be closely linked without duplicating their duties [ 24 ]. Therefore, the successful implementation of community-linked services will require effective communication among healthcare providers.…”
