The role of mammalian foetal membranes in early embryogenesis: Lessons from marsupials

Abstract: Across mammals, early embryonic development is supported by uterine secretions taken up through the yolk sac and other foetal membranes (histotrophic nutrition). The marsupial conceptus is enclosed in a shell coat for the first two-thirds of gestation and nutrients pass to the embryo through the shell and the avascular bilaminar yolk sac. At around the time of shell rupture, part of the yolk sac is trilaminar and supplied with

“…Early cleavage is meroblastic (Flynn & Hill, 1939, 1947), and a bilaminar yolk sac extends around the egg (Hughes, 1993; Hughes & Hall, 1998; Stewart, 1997). The yolk sac becomes vascularized after oviposition (Hughes, 1984; Luckett, 1977), and along with the chorioallantois, provides for gas exchange (Carter, 2020). Anatomical descriptions (Hughes, 1993; Hughes & Hall, 1998; Semon, 1894; Wilson & Hill, 1908) offer no evidence of spaghetti‐like strands like those of extant, non‐avian reptiles.…”
