The role of magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of bone tumours and tumour-like lesions

Abstract: Teaching Points• When a lesion is indeterminate or shows signs of aggressiveness, MRI is indicated.• When MRI does not lead to a diagnosis, biopsy is indicated.• MRI is superior to the other imaging modalities in detecting bone marrow lesions.• MRI is very helpful in local staging and surgical planning.• MRI is used in assessing the response to neoadjuvant therapy, restaging and post-therapeutic follow-up.

“…MR arthrography technique has improved significantly resulting in more routine use of this technique [3] . MRI is very helpful in surgical planning, because it is confirms the diagnosis in cases when other radiographs or imaging modalities are normal or equivocal, due to its high sensitivity and specificity as compared with other modalities [4] .…”

“…Quantitative or semiquantitative measurement of contrast enhancement can be performed using regions of interest. The use of intravenous contrast in bone marrow imaging increases accuracy in distinguishing benign vs. malignant lesions, helps to differentiate between tumor and perilesional edema, and helps to more accurately direct biopsy to a cellular area of tumor (as opposed to a necrotic area) …”

“…The use of intravenous contrast in bone marrow imaging increases accuracy in distinguishing benign vs. malignant lesions, helps to differentiate between tumor and perilesional edema, and helps to more accurately direct biopsy to a cellular area of tumor (as opposed to a necrotic area). 17 Several limitations persist in WBMRI, chief among them the fact that it remains contraindicated for some patients (particularly those with certain older implantable cardiac devices) and also the exclusion (despite the relatively large field of view) of the distal aspect of the upper extremities.…”
