The role of local adaptation in sustainable production of village chickens

Abstract: Village chickens are ubiquitous in smallholder farming systems, contributing to household, local and national economies under diverse environmental, economic and cultural settings. However, they are raised in challenging environments where productivity is low while mortality is high. There is much interest in utilizing indigenous genetic resources to produce a chicken resilient to its environment, whilst providing the basis of an economically sustainable enterprise. Globally, however, a wide variety of interve… Show more

“…Also, considering the specific adaptive potential and robustness of locally adapted breeds, breed replacement may reduce the resilience of livestock production systems. The use of mixed herds and modifying herd composition to favour more resistant species or breeds are components of a classical strategy of herders facing long-term droughts ( Blench and Marriage, 1999 ) and the use of locally adapted breeds has been suggested as an option to cope with constraints (drought, feed shortage, disease) induced by climate change ( Musemwa et al 2012 ; Bettridge et al, 2018 ). Considering the short and long term impact that the COVID 19 pandemic will have on food and agriculture in general and livestock in particular (e.g.…”

“…From an environmental standpoint, crop diversification is one of the main strategies adopted by farmers to mitigate long-term changes in climatic conditions around the world [10][11][12]. Diversified operations tend to build more stable ecosystems overtime allowing faster response to physical and social changes [13]. To illustrate, consider a situation where a farmer adds cover crops to her/his existing crop rotations.…”

“…Different combinations of temperature and rainfall patterns have created a gradation in climatic conditions, which vary from hot-humid and hot-arid to cold-humid and cold-arid ( Figure 1B). Over time, the diverse agro-climatic conditions have shaped the genetics of the chicken populations enabling them to adapt to the local agro-ecological environments and production systems (2).…”
