The Role of Life Satisfaction in Predicting Youth Violence and Offending: A Prospective Examination

Abstract: Life satisfaction in adolescence has been shown to protect against numerous negative outcomes (e.g. substance-use, sexual risk-taking), but limited work has directly explored the relationship between life satisfaction and youth violence and offending. As such, we conducted a prospective assessment to explore this relationship among community (n = 334), and at-risk youth (n = 99). Findings suggest life satisfaction is significantly associated with decreased offending and violence within both samples and adds in… Show more

“…satisfaction (Lázaro-Visa et al, 2019;Ramos-Díaz et al, 2019) and life satisfaction negatively predict delinquency (Jung and Choi, 2017;Hanniball et al, 2018). In the separate regression analysis, all related PYD attributes also showed significant direct predictions on delinquency.…”

“…The above theoretical notions have been supported by rich empirical findings showing positive predictions of PYD attributes on adolescent life satisfaction (Zhang, 2016;Lázaro-Visa et al, 2019;Ma, 2020) and negative predictions of life satisfaction on adolescent delinquency (Jung and Choi, 2017;Hanniball et al, 2018;Lee et al, 2020). A handful of pioneering studies have empirically tested the mediational role of life satisfaction in linking PYD attributes to behavioral problems (Sun andShek, 2010, 2012).…”

“…A few longitudinal studies have provided initial support for the above theoretical assertions. For example, LS among adolescents negatively predicted externalizing and internalizing problems measured in six months (Lyons et al 2014;Hanniball et al 2018), twelve months (Shek 1998), and two years (Haranin et al 2007). Similarly, Jung and Choi (2017) identified a significant longitudinal negative effect of earlier LS on later adolescent delinquency during early adolescence.…”

“…In general, good citizenship behavior and activity are linked to a sense of fulfillment in life (Meynhardt, Brieger, & Hermann, 2018). Life satisfaction acts a a key mediating role in increasing gratitude and reducing substance use, violence, sexual risk-taking, materialism, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and stress over time (Hanniball et al, 2021;Hartstone& Medvedev, 2021;Lambert et al, 2009;Liu et al, 2021).…”
