The household solid waste (HSW) constitutes a main segment of municipal solid waste (MSW). Therefore, effective management of HSW has become an imperative issue to solve the problems caused by massive generation of HSW, the protection and sustainability of the environment, as well as the protection of public health in Jordan. The present study was conducted to assess the amount and components of urban HSW generated and to determine the influencing factors in the urban areas of Irbid city, Jordan. The study was conducted on 383 households. The driving forces behind Irbid household waste generation were analyzed using a multiple linear regression model.The outcomes of this study indicated that the average waste produced by households was 0.90 kg/cap/day. Also, the data analysis displayed that organic waste represents more than half of the total composition of waste 58.56% followed by plastic 14.59%, paper and paper products 9.61%, glass 7.49%, metal 4.19%, rubber and leather, others, and textile had the lowest concentrations, being less than 2% wt. The multiple linear regression outcomes displayed that the value of R 2 was found to be 0.614 for the household waste generation per capita. Also, according to Pearson's coefficient and Point-Biserial correlation values, a positive correlation was found between HSW generation and gender of household head r = 0.256, household size r = 0.629, and monthly household income r = 0.529, while a negative correlation was found between household waste generation and age of the household head r = -0.329, and education level of the household head r = -0.303.The study findings serve to provide crucial inputs to the policymakers and planners concerned with environmental issues in making their decisions toward a more effective and sustainable solid waste management (SWM) system, which helps to protect the environment and the maintain natural resources.

In the recent urban development of the city of Zarqa in Jordan, the public open spaces in this city have not been designed to accommodate the high and rapid population increase. As such, Zarqa city does not have adequate public open spaces that meet the users' needs. As a result of inadequate public open spaces, people created new informal open spaces to practice recreational, and other, activities. This research investigated success of formal (officiallyorganized) public open spaces and the informal spaces created by users according to the indicators of successful public open spaces. It used qualitative and quantitative approaches using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and a questionnaire survey. The primary data were collected using various tools like the questionnaire and the GIS whilst the secondary data were obtained from the literature. This study concludes with a spatial model consists of multirecommendation contributing the success of public open spaces in Zarqa City. This model gives an opportunity to guide the government, municipal authorities, planners, and decisionmakers responsible for designing public open spaces to enhance the future community-friendly spaces in cities suffering unplanned urban and population growth. The significance of this study is that it is the first specifically examining the designing public open spaces in Jordan. This model therefore can be applied to other Jordan cities that are similar to Zarqa City. It can also be developed further in order to inform the similar works that are being undertaken in developing countries cities in terms of urban development and population growth.

Reviving the Traditional House Architecture in Irbid City, Jordan

This study highlights the importance of reviving the traditional houses architecture in Irbid city, Jordan. Every region has its architectural character, which is often influenced by the local context (the natural and cultural environments), particularly in Irbid city, which contains many traditional houses constructed hundreds of years ago. Between 1930 and 1960, most of these houses had been demolished and replaced with new constructions. The objective of this study was, thus, to propose plans and actions for reviving the traditional house as a cultural heritage. This paper presents a review of relevant literature, emphasizing the preservation concept and the heritage types; then, it briefs the history of Irbid city and highlights its population growth and urban composition. A field survey was conducted in the city. Based on it, four houses were selected to represent the different types of heritage houses, with emphasis on their design, building components, the technology used in their construction, the building materials, handling of the openings (arches), the ornaments of the buildings, and the urban form and its relationship with sustainability. The discussion in this paper summarizes the lessons learned from applying low technology in house construction and using natural building materials that can be recycled to achieve the sustainability of architecture. In addition, the discussion points out the challenges faced in the preservation of heritage. Afterward, the researchers suggest plans and actions that contribute to preserving this city's identity and heritage and conserving its heritage sites for future generations.
