The role of L-arginine and aerobic exercise in experimental renal ischemia reperfusion injury in male and female rats

Abstract: Original Article AbstractIntroduction: Renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation is the main cause of acute kidney damage. Nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis and oxidative stress are closely related to the pathogenesis of renal I/R injury. This study was undertaken to determine the effects of L-arginine (L-arg) as NO donor and aerobic exercise (EX) and also the combination of L-arg with EX on renal I/R injury in male and female rats.

“…The results of this study showed that administration of L-arg and exercise training ameliorated renal dysfunction and kidney damage induced by renal I/R in male gender, although Cr values were not changed by L-arg. In agreement with these results, it is demonstrated that kidney function was improved by L-arg or exercise in renal I/R in normal diet fed male rats (29).…”

“…Exercise training and L-arg administration improved renal function and histopathology in males but not in females. In inconsistent with these observations, it was reported that both exercise and L-arg recovered renal failure induced by kidney I/R in both male and female genders fed by normal diet (29). It seems that the main reason of this contrast is different diets in two studies.…”

“…In disagreement with our study, a study conducted by Yavari et al (2015) showed that exercise tends to increase oxidative stress due to higher oxygen consumption. Furthermore, Vafamand et al (2017) demostrated that exercise increased serum MDA and oxidative stress, because the antioxidant system was not adapted to excessive production of ROS due to I/R injury.…”
